Sometimes when creating a take-home essay or exam, it is useful to implement a time limit to simulate an in-class exam. Moodle provides this option under your quiz’s settings. First, create your quiz by clicking Turn editing on, then Add Activity Click. Select “Quiz” and click Add. Add any necessary information to the quiz such as a name, a description, and grading criteria.

Under the Timing heading, check “Enable” and select your desired time limit.TimedQuiz1

Finish customizing your quiz then click Save and display at the bottom of the page. Here you can add your desired quiz questions by following the instructions in Add a Quiz.

To create a timed take-home essay, click Edit quiz.TimedQuiz3On the righthand side, click Add then + a new question.

Choose Essay and click Add.TimedQuiz6

Name your question, and under question text, add the essay prompt and any other necessary instructions. Scroll down to Response Options, change “Allow attachments” to 1, 2, 3, or Unlimited, and choose the minimum required number of attachments.

Click Save changes when you are finished.

Warning: When your students start the quiz, they will have the allotted time to take the exam and/or upload an essay. If the session times out or the student logs off during the quiz, the time will still continue to count down, so make sure your students know to re-log in before the time limit runs out.
