The CDLA is offering small grants to Oxy students for the purchase of equipment and supplies related to projects that advance the digital liberal arts.

What is the micro-grant?

Students may apply for up to $400 in support of software, hardware or other tools and materials related to the production and publication of digital scholarship. Small groups of students (2-3) may also apply and receive funding of up to $400 for each member. Students are encouraged to submit experimental, interdisciplinary, or co-curricular projects that explore new modes of inquiry. Non-consumable equipment will be retained by the college at the close of the project in order to make it available to future students through the Critical Making Studio check out system.

Funding is accompanied by support from a CDLA mentor and student awardees are required to document and publish resulting work in OxCo, the CDLA’s homegrown modular portfolio, and badging system. (note: in addition to OxCo, publication may take a non-traditional format, such as sharing of code, a presentation, or a video, etc.).

What kinds of projects are funded?

Projects should demonstrate the enduring value of liberal arts practices (e.g., critical thinking, knowledge production, interdisciplinarity, etc.) in their use of digital media and making tools (e.g., 3D printing, virtual reality, physical computing, media creation, etc.). Projects will be evaluated on a rolling basis by CDLA staff and advanced student workers on the basis of their creativity, originality, budget and academic relevance.

How can I apply?

Students applying for a DLA Micro-Grant are encouraged to attend one of two information sessions offered in the spring semester. Though it is not mandatory, attendance of the information session is considered in the application.

Proposals should be shared with as a Google Doc with the filename LastName_DLAGrant and must include answers to the following questions:

  1. What problem or concept are you investigating?
  2. Who will benefit from your project?
  3. What academic courses or experiences will inform your project?
  4. Needed materials and budget
  5. What kind of mentorship is needed (what do you need to learn or where could you use support from professional staff)?
  6. How will you document the work and share it with peers?
